The Best Locations for Your Family Photography Experience

Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing hundreds of families, each session unique in its own way. My goal is always to capture the essence and individuality of each family member, as well as the dynamic between them. With children and pets often part of the equation, I’ve learned that a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free, seamless experience. From picking the perfect date to planning outfits, packing snacks, and choosing the ideal location, there are some key steps to ensure your session goes smoothly.

One of the most common questions I receive when someone books a family session is, “Where should we have our photos taken?” The answer to that question is simple. Your location should be a place that speaks to you as a family. It should capture the vibe you want and reflect the season in which your photos will be taken. The landscape and energy of a location change dramatically throughout the year, so it’s important to choose a spot that aligns with your vision.

Since this question comes up so often, I thought I’d share some of my go-to locations for family photos. Having had the privilege of shooting all over the world, I’ve decided to offer a broad list of locations that you can consider, rather than focusing on specific cities.

Home Sweet Home

There’s no place like home. As the saying goes, "Home is where the heart is," and while it might sound cliché, it rings true. Your family home is where you feel the most comfortable and safe, and it’s often the perfect location for a photoshoot. When children, especially those under 10, are involved, this familiarity allows them to be themselves right away. The true essence of your family comes through in an environment they know and love.

Even beyond the house itself, there are endless opportunities. Take a walk down the street, play with sidewalk chalk, ride bikes, or run around in the backyard. And because you're in a familiar place, distractions are minimal, something that can be challenging when shooting in new locations.

My Local Favourites:

Wherever you live!

Advantages:

  • Children feel most comfortable here

  • Fewer distractions

  • A true representation of who you are as a family

  • Dog and pet-friendly

Disadvantages:

  • Some tidying up might be needed beforehand

  • Kids can sometimes get too comfortable and act silly (but a quick break and a little bribery often help!)

Historic Sites

If you’re a fan of architecture, historic sites are the perfect backdrop for your family photoshoot. I have a deep passion for all styles of architecture, from the refined elegance of Neoclassical design to the striking boldness of Art Deco. These timeless locations can transport you to another era, adding a cinematic and distinctive flair to your photos. Depending on the site, you’ll encounter a variety of architectural wonders that can elevate the overall mood of your session. Just keep in mind that many of these locations require advance bookings, and they may not always be right around the corner. So, a little road trip might be in order, one that’s definitely worth it. And, of course, make sure to bring a change of clothes for the kids once you arrive!

My Local Favourites:

Dundurn Castle, The Hermitage, Paletta Mansion, City Hall

Advantages:

  • Transforms your photos with stunning backdrops

  • Adds a unique element to your images

Disadvantages:

  • Can be crowded during peak seasons

  • Some locations may not allow pets

  • Permits may be required

  • Travelling to the location

The Beach

The beach offers an enchanting backdrop for family photos, especially during golden hour or on those beautiful overcast days. I’ve yet to have a beach session that I didn’t absolutely love. Whether your shoot is relaxed, spending quality time as a family by the water, or more formal with coordinated outfits and minimal play, the beach provides a stunning environment. After capturing those “must-have” shots, the real magic unfolds when the family starts running through the water or playing in the sand. That’s when the true fun begins. Just a little tip: be sure to plan ahead by avoiding holiday weekends and peak hours. And, if you’re bringing your fur baby along, double-check that the beach is dog-friendly!

My Local Favourites:

Long Point, Van Wagner’s Beach, The hundreds of beaches along our Great Lakes

Advantages:

  • A stunning, natural backdrop

  • Playful, carefree atmosphere for children

  • Bright, airy photos

  • Perfect for family “adventures”

Disadvantages:

  • Many beaches do not allow dogs or require them to be leashed

  • Young children can get easily distracted

  • Beaches can be crowded depending on the time of day and season

Parks

Parks are often the go-to choice for family photos, and for good reason. They offer convenience, ample green space, and a relaxed atmosphere. If your children love a particular park and it’s dog-friendly, it can be the perfect spot. However, parks can also bring a bit of chaos. Children are often more captivated by the playground or other kids than being with their family. When choosing a park, try to pick one that offers plenty of space and variety. This way, you can let the kids play after the formal shots or easily switch locations if a certain area is too crowded. Parks are a dream for capturing candid, playful moments, but if you're aiming for more formal portraits, it can be a bit trickier.

My Local Favourites:

Princess Point, Bayfront Park, Bronte Park, Gage Park

Advantages:

  • Candid, playful, and real moments

  • Convenient and easy to access

  • Dog-friendly in many cases

Disadvantages:

  • Can get crowded during peak times

  • Some parks don’t allow pets

  • Permits may be required at certain locations

Forests and Trails

For a more moody and natural vibe, forested areas and trails are the perfect choice. Whether it’s a hike to your favourite family spot or a visit to grandma’s property, these locations provide an intimate and magical atmosphere. The best photos here often take on a documentary style, capturing the genuine moments of your family enjoying time together. However, it’s important to note that forested areas can be quite dark, especially during golden hour. In the summer, the lush greenery can cast a “green glow” over your photos, giving them a unique, moody effect. While this can be beautiful and evocative, it won’t deliver the fresh, airy feel that a beach or open field might offer.

My Local Favourites:

Apps Mill, The Hermitage Trails, Tiffany Falls

Advantages:

  • Playful, candid moments

  • A fun family adventure

  • Dog-friendly in most cases

Disadvantages:

  • Trails can get busy depending on the time of day and season

  • Greenery can cast a green hue on your photos

  • Bugs, lots of bugs in warmer months!

Parking Garages

It may sound unconventional, but parking garages can actually make for an incredibly unique and striking photo location. I had the pleasure of shooting in a stunning parking garage in Austin, Texas, which had clean lines, vibrant walls, and panoramic views of the city. The architectural simplicity of a parking garage, combined with the modern design elements, provided an unexpectedly bold and creative backdrop. The controlled environment of the garage allowed me to experiment with light and angles, offering a lot of flexibility and artistic freedom. Whether using the geometric shapes of the structure or capturing the cityscape views from the top, the space offered a fresh perspective on what a photoshoot can be. Of course, it’s crucial to research your location beforehand, ensuring that it’s the right fit for your vision. But when done right, a parking garage can add an unexpected, edgy artistic flair to your photos, turning an ordinary space into something truly special and memorable.

My Local Favourites:

Hamilton Farmer’s Market Parking Garage (MacNab St. N & York Blvd.), Brantford Municipal Parking Office (Icomm Dr. & Water St.)

Advantages:

  • Unique, artistic photos with clean lines

  • Interesting backdrops with modern city vibes

  • Great lighting and different perspectives

Disadvantages:

  • Can be busy depending on the time of day

  • Some garages require paid parking

  • No green space or natural elements

Studio Sessions

For a completely controlled environment, a studio photoshoot offers both predictability and versatility. As an artist, I truly appreciate the creative freedom a studio setting provides, allowing me to experiment with lighting, backdrops, and compositions in ways that outdoor locations simply can't offer. Studios often come equipped with a variety of props and different settings that can be used to enhance the mood or theme of your shoot. However, sometimes the simplest settings, a plain white or black wall, can be the most powerful. The understated backdrop allows your family to shine as the main focus, creating a sense of timelessness. This simplicity results in classic, refined images that, when done right, won't go out of style. Studio portraiture is all about highlighting the beauty and connection of your family, and the result is artwork that will stand the test of time and be cherished for generations.

My Local Favourites:

Aviva Studio (The Cotton Factory), Millworks Creative, Mintroom Studios + Preto Loft

Advantages:

  • Controlled lighting for perfect photos

  • Variety of settings and backdrops

  • Timeless, artistic portraits

Disadvantages:

  • Limited interaction with the environment

Whether it's the comfort and familiarity of your home, the breathtaking backdrop of a scenic beach, or a vibrant park full of life, every location has its own story to tell. And if you have a spot that holds special meaning for you, whether it’s a hidden gem you’ve discovered or a place filled with memories, I would love nothing more than to explore it with you! From the carefully considered location to the genuine moments we capture together, I promise to create timeless images that will be cherished for years to come.

This year I am grateful for YOU

As I reflect on the passing year, my heart overflows with gratitude. For over seven years, my husband and I have shared a nightly tradition we call "Gratefuls." From the very first day we met, we committed to taking a moment each night before sleep to reflect on the blessings of the day. Even when distance separates us due to his frequent travels, we continue this ritual—whether through FaceTime or a simple text message. Through seasons of joy and times of challenge, this practice has grounded us, a gentle reminder that even on the most difficult days, there are always moments of beauty to be found.

As the year draws to a close, I find myself pausing to reflect on the journey I've walked, especially in a year that has been both testing and transformative. It has been a season of personal trials, filled with tears and sleepless nights, but through it all, I have done my best to weather the storms and dance in the rain. Thanks to my husband, I have learned the art of living in the moment, appreciating the incredible people, places, and beauty that surround me.

And despite the challenges, I find myself rich with gratitude.

I’ve been an artist since the moment I took my first breath, and without the unwavering support and encouragement of all of you, I would not be where I am today—living my wildest dream as a full-time artist. Each inquiry email, every shared photo, and each kind note or love letter serves as a gentle reminder that I am walking the path I was always meant to take.

This year, I am profoundly thankful for the families whose lives I have had the privilege to capture, year after year. Many of these families I first met through photographing their weddings, and over time, we’ve built lasting connections. As they welcomed children into their lives, I was there to document their growth, celebrating with them as they blossomed into families. In many ways, they have become my own.

I am also grateful for the new friendships that have developed through the lens of my camera. Each new connection begins with a simple message—an email, a text, or a call—but once we meet, the rest is history. I often find that my relationship with my clients evolves beyond the professional, as we share in the joy and success of one another's lives.

This year, I have had the privilege of celebrating with so many families as they welcomed new life into the world. There is something profoundly moving about newborn sessions—the raw emotion of new parents adjusting to life with their tiny miracles, the awe and wonder of siblings meeting their new family members. These moments are sacred, and I am grateful to witness them.

I am thankful for the newly engaged couples who have invited me to document this chapter of their love story. From the moment we first speak, I cherish hearing about their paths that led them to one another, and I find immense joy in brainstorming creative ways to incorporate their unique bond into their photo sessions. With every click of the camera, I am filled with a quiet happiness, knowing I am capturing the essence of their love.

Equally, I am grateful for the couples who entrusted me with one of the most monumental days of their lives—their weddings. To me, weddings are like grand finales, the spectacular fireworks at a celebration, or the premier of a much-anticipated film. I often wonder who is more excited—the couple or me! From our first conversation to the final farewell at the end of the night, documenting the emotions and stories that unfold on a wedding day is a privilege I cherish deeply. There have been many times I have been moved to tears behind the camera, not just by the beauty of the day, but by the bond I’ve formed with the couple.

Weddings, too, bring a sense of camaraderie with the incredible vendors who help bring these special days to life. The inside jokes, the laughter, and the high-fives—we celebrate each other as much as we celebrate the couple. The teamwork and unity at these events is something extraordinary, and I am grateful for the chance to collaborate with such talented and passionate people.

Whether this is your first time or your tenth time partnering with me, this year, I am especially thankful for you.

Thank you for trusting me with the most precious gifts in the world: your loved ones, and your memories.

Zaya

There’s a tradition in Mexico called “la mordida” which means “the bite”. Usually, the birthday girl or boy get their face shoved into their birthday cake while everyone yells, “Mordida! Mordida!” In this case, Zaya’s face wasn’t pushed into the cake; but her father playfully encouraged her to bite her birthday cake after the candle went out.

I was standing with my camera in hand watching this unfold, so happy that her father encouraged her to bite right into her cake. However, I had no idea this was a Mexican tradition until I said to her father, “I love that you let her bite her cake!” He then explained to me the tradition and I thought that every child should be able to bite right into their birthday cake, especially Zaya.

Zaya, means fate, destiny, woman who wins and strong fighter which is completely fitting for this beautiful, strong soul. Zaya was born on January 1, 2019 and was delivered during a natural birth. Shortly after delivery, her oxygen levels dropped and she was rushed to a children’s hospital via flight.

Zaya’s parents, Rose and Justin, soon learned that their beautiful baby girl had a chromosomal abnormality called Trisomy 21 (Downs Syndrome) as well as a congenital heart defect called AV Canal Defect. This meant she had a large hole in the center of her heart. Her parents were told that she would be needing heart surgery before six months of age. The next few months were going to be a long, hard road of therapy, treatments and finding the best doctor to perform the surgery.

In May of 2019, just over four months after her birth, Zaya headed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for her open-heart surgery.

It was a success.

She is a strong fighter.

She is a woman who wins.

It has been five years since her beautiful, but traumatic entrance into the world; however, her parents have noted that she has passed gracefully through her daily struggles teaching us all more about love, compassion and strength.

While I was in Mexico, I had the pleasure of photographing Zaya’s 5th birthday and in that short time she truly did teach me about love, compassion and left me smiling. She brightens every space she is in, which was made very apparent during her grand entrance into her 5th birthday party in her princess dress.

In fact, during her whole party she was bright.

Every decoration she saw left her beaming.

Every face she saw left her smiling.

Every animal she saw left her giggling.

Every gift she was given left her in awe.

Every bite of her cake left her in complete bliss.

After meeting Zaya, you would never imagine the hardships she has been though. Zaya’s innocence and purity give us insight on how to navigate life. She shows everyone how to be in the moment, enjoy the little things and to fall in love deeply with everything and everyone.

If you ever have the chance to graced by Zaya’s presence, it’s fate and destiny.

in a sea of white

The journey starts as you drive down a rural road with the windows down on a spring day. As the farm comes into sight, it is truly breathtaking. There is nothing like seeing a vast sea of white cherry blossoms slowly and softly dancing in the spring breeze. The air is warm and there is a faint humming of bees who are busy at work. Everyone that comes onto the cherry farm has the same reaction and are in complete “awe”.

Kids jump out of the car and excitedly run up and down the rows, picking dandelion seeds and blowing on them ever so gently sending the soft seeds into flight. Some also collect the vibrant yellow fully bloomed flowers making bouquets and tucking them behind their hair. There are kids looking for bugs in the newly sprouted grass and games of hide and seek behind the broad, proud trees. There is also dancing while sundresses are spun around and, of course, I am there quietly observing and documenting it all.

My approach is to be as sneaky as possible while being along side the families. Some direction is given, but my favourite thing to do is to watch as they explore, play and run. I do love taking part in the exploration as well, especially when children are involved. I will often jump in and play, camera in hand, getting some of those unexpected, candid images. I tend to stay away from staging images, but more so prompt individuals to get those perfect moments to capture. The sessions are not limited to families. It also includes maternity, newborn, engagement as well as those just because.

Every spring this familiar place brings me such joy as it is one of my favourite places to not only visit but also to take photos in. It is magical, surreal and the perfect place to make and document memories. The best part, is sharing it with you and showing you the beauty in the every day moments of your life.
